I get asked this question all the time and yes, there is most definitely a big difference between over-the-counter (OTC) skincare and clinical-grade or medical-grade formulations. It comes down to the purity and concentration of the ingredients, the delivery system (can it be delivered deeply into the skin where it belongs), and the facts (clinical studies).
Do you want something that says it works, or something that actually does?
You can walk into Sephora and the skincare products can have misleading advertisements because of so little regulation in retail skincare. The product can quite literally say ‘retinol”, “peptide” or “collagen” yet that ingredient is far down the ingredient deck, meaning that there is not much of it in there. Or perhaps you won’t find that ingredient in it at all. You won’t find anything about its formulation either so you won’t know if it can actually get into your skin or not. There are some great OTC Brands but definitely not all, or maybe not even most.
